Glen Iris is located 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District in the Cities of Boroondara and Stonnington. Captain Thomas Henderson, of the Royal Navy, arrived in Melbourne on a ship called Iris in 1850. He acquired a property bounded by Gardiners Creek, High Street and a line extending Summerhill Road to Gardiners Creek. The property was advertised in 1852 for sale under the name of Glen Iris.
Glen Iris, is a quiet, easy-going neighbourhood of quaint homes, a neat shopping strip and good freeway access.
Glen Iris is a fairly large, family-friendly blanket of period homes and greenery just next to the suburb of Malvern. It’s pretty and hilly (for Melbourne anyways!) with parks, good schools and a charming shopping strip along High Street. It’s also excellent for transport – be it train, tram, car or bus.
Glen Iris’s sense of space makes it a perfect choice for couples or families who don’t feel the need to live in the fast lane, but it’s still close enough to town to keep young independent people happy.
The Glen Iris Lifestyle
Glen Iris is a broad, undulating suburb with relative proximity to the city and several pockets to explore on its major thoroughfares of Malvern Road, High Street, Burke Road and beyond. Tooronga Shopping Centre is a medium sized shopping centre with deli’s and a Coles supermarket, while High Street is more classic village shopping. You can take a dip at the stunning Harold Holt Swim Centre or brunch with friends on the weekend at Glen Iris institution Mr Foxx.
Glen Iris has great transport options with easy access to Tooronga and Glen Iris train stations, several tram and bus routes and easy access to Melbourne’s Monash freeway entries. There are also a large number of prestigious schools, both public and private, located within the suburb.
One option for guests staying at our Glen Iris property includes dressing up and attending the nearby Caulfield Racecourse. There are over 23 race days each racing season and some of Australia’s most famous and historic races are conducted here including the Caulfield Cup during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
